Why Does He Say 'G' Pentatonic When On The 5th Fret And Not 'A'?

The instructors here refer to the G Pentatonic Pattern a lot. 


The keyword here is PATTERN. This shape is based on the Open G Chord. The position of this shape determines the key.

In the video, Charlie uses the G Pentatonic Pattern on the 5th fret of the Low E String.  This means that the scale is now in the key of A minor.


We can use this shape anywhere on the fretboard to play in any key. For example, If we take this same shape and move it up 2 frets to start on the 7th fret, we are now in the key of B minor.
